114 - The great strike (2024)

Release date
2024
1 hour 30 minutes

Today, continued payment of wages in the event of illness is a matter of course. But in the 1950s, workers in the FRG - unlike salaried employees - did not receive a single penny during the first days of illness. "Drunk on Sunday, blue on Monday," say the employers, refusing to pay any wages. That, above all, is why 34,000 metalworkers and their families strike in the shipyards and factories of Schleswig-Holstein in October 1956. Our docudrama is about universal values, about human rights.

The strike in Schleswig-Holstein is of great significance for the whole of Germany. There is a huge wave of sympathy and solidarity actions from all regions of Germany. The shipyard workers in Bremen, the carmakers from Baden-Württemberg, the steelworkers from the Ruhr region - everyone is hoping for a victory for the strikers and supporting them. The labor dispute is also being noticed internationally. It is the longest and toughest strike in German history. The labor dispute lasted 114 days. The equality of blue and white collar workers is still valid today, and the story of this strike tells of the struggle of the disadvantaged for justice, of the ability to emancipate. The film uses non-fictional and fictional means. (Source: Nordmedia.de)

For the docu-drama about the fictional Kiel working-class family Freese, Sabine Bernardi (Director, Writer) and Ingo Helm (Documentary filmmaker and historian) immersed themselves in the 1950s, sifting through sources in archives and interviewing contemporary witnesses in Kiel, Flensburg and Lübeck.
