Toubab (2021)

Release date
2021

The film was shot from the beginning of July to the beginning of August 2018 in Frankfurt am Main, Darmstadt and the surrounding area, including a prefabricated housing estate in Darmstadt-Kranichstein and a workshop in Frankfurt. The working title was "Manche lernen's nie" (Some never lern), another working title was "Homies". Max Preiss served as the cameraman. He and the director had come across Kranichstein as an ideal main filming location during an initial location tour. Kranichstein has something of a microcosm and functions visually as a parable, according to the director: "It is a self-contained satellite where many things are possible. It's very beautiful there, yet of course the brutality of the architecture is also clearly noticeable."

Plot: After his release from prison, Babtou (Farba Dieng) is looking forward to a new start with his buddy Dennis (Julius Nitschkoff). They want to enjoy their newfound freedom and have nothing more to do with the authorities. But at Babtou's spontaneous welcome party, where all the gangsters of the neighborhood are gathered, everything goes wrong. That same evening, Babtou's handcuffs click again. Because of repeated delinquencies and a changed danger situation in Senegal, he is to be deported to his "home country" in a few weeks. Babtou takes legal advice, and it becomes clear that only marriage to a German citizen could prevent his deportation. But the search for a suitable candidate proves difficult, as the macho man has a legendarily bad reputation among the women in the neighborhood. So he tries to persuade Dennis to enter into a sham marriage.
